That is right… “Doctor” Paul Broun says that he does not support government run health care because you can treat Major Depression in the Emergency Room:

This is beyond disturbing. Athens, wake up! This is YOUR Congressman talking! Treating major depression is not a one-shot deal. That is like saying cancer patients should get treatment one night in the E.R. and it is all better. You cannot treat chronic conditions in the ER.

Big Thanks to Ryan Lewis for sending me the video!

  4. Wow, just wow! Just how disconnected can you get from reality? Broun should be publicly flogged.

  6. Dustin –

You have caught the essence of the healthcare debate right here. You have a congressman who is uninformed and outraged that a constituent would stand up in his meeting and bring up a legitimate complaint. Republicans have been devoid of reality for some time. This is simply further evidence of the truth.

As a surgeon, I see people in the emergency room all the time. I admit them for an acute problem but notice they have chronic problems that have been poorly controlled. Why? They can afford it.

You make an excellent point that chronic conditions should not be treated in the ER. If you don’t mind, I would like to expand on that point. Not only should chronic conditions not be treating the ER, we end up spending far more money by treating chronic conditions in the ER. Therefore, your insurance premium and my insurance premium goes up in order to pay for patients who come to the emergency room with non-emergent conditions for treatment and don’t have health insurance. This is one reason why healthcare costs have skyrocketed in the last 15-20 years.

Finally, I might add, that there’s several things that are not being talked about as we “discuss” healthcare reform. Mental disorders and dental coverage always seem to get left out of any healthcare plan. We’ve done a terrible job in this country of taking care of the mentally ill. Many of the 165 million Americans who have insurance are not covered for mental disorders. Although the Senate Finance Committee bill (Senate Bill 1213) has multiple problems, it appears to improve mental health coverage for Medicare and Medicaid patients. It is unclear to me if the bill will force private insurance companies to do a better job of covering mental illnesses.

    Thanks for your great post.

[...] Exhibit 2: Representative Paul Broun (Republican-Georgia) held a town hall last week where a constituent with major Depression said he can’t afford insurance for his chronic condition. Being a good Republican, Representative Broun told this man that he needed to go to the emergency room. The stupidity of this statement cannot be emphasized enough. Treating chronic conditions in the emergency room is one of the reasons why we spent $2.2 trillion on health care in 2007. It is one of the prime reasons for escalating healthcare costs. Yet, this representative is sending a constituent to the emergency room for a nonemergent problem. Secondly, chronic conditions, in order to keep them under control, need a long-term plan of therapy. Especially mental conditions. This is the only way you can decrease relapses and increase this person’s productivity. (Original post is from Georgia Liberal) [...]
